I'm a big fan of Ferm Living. If you have kidlets..the children's range ticks all the boxes. Great individual graphics, characters, fun colour, considered kiddy design (check it out). Its maybe a little late for New Year greetings! After a long christmas break, I'm refreshed and ready for the new year. I'm not one for unrealistic resolutions..more realistics challenges..mastering crochet (I have started this challenge...more of that later), a break from vino for a few weeks, remembering peoples birthdays!, remaining fit & focused, spending more quality time with family and friends...a year just flies by! And finally making time to get to grips with my camera. Mmmm I hope I'm proud in a year.

91 Magazine launched this week by Caroline of Patchwork Harmony blog. 91 magazine is named after Caroline's first home. Mmm a place were after years of renting she could finally make her (interior) mark. We can all relate to that..I'm sure. 91 is a combination of interiors, vintage finds, interesting editorial (I find so many online magazines are just pretty pictures!) and like minded contributors. Highlights include vintage guides in the UK and world wide (one of my snaps is on page 32!), stunning styled photoshoots 'lace and florals' and inspiring homes. We all like a nosey around somebody elses home. The featured homes are aspirational without being unrealistic. (I have the flamingos in my bedroom too! I'm in good company!) I love the fact that the articles are UK focused. So all in all..interiors, vintage, UK, like minded contributors...definitely my cup of tea!

Anthony Burill is responsible for the infamous "Work Hard and Be Nice to People".
"Burrill works across a range of media, including posters, moving image and three-dimensional work. He combines an instinctive handling of colour and composition with a witty approach to words. He has worked on advertising campaigns and posters for clients such as The Economist, the British Library and London Underground. He regularly collaborates with musicians and animators to make films, music promos and animations, using his distinctive visual vocabulary and passion for fusing sound and image. His installations and 3-D work have been commissioned by Colette in Paris and The Design Museum in London among others.

Printmaking is an important part of Burrill’s practice and he creates limited edition prints with slogans including “Work Hard and Be Nice to People” that have become mantras for the design community and beyond. Burrill has also taken part in group and solo exhibitions around the world – from London’s Kemistry Gallery to the Graphic Design Museum at Breda - and lectured and led workshops at numerous design events and educational institutions."

What a crazy day. 29 degrees in October! Who would have thought? I wonder how different London town would be if we had a warmer climate? No doubt we wouldn't appreciate it as much as we do this weekend. En route to Kew the train broke down and we took a detour to Little Venice (work that one out?). A lovely day taking in numerous watering holes....and a nod to what was going to be a botanical inspired day. The stunning Clifton Nurseries are tucked down a residential street in Warwick Ave a little oasis in a really rough area (not really! its quite well to do!).
Oh and the best drink ever is alcoholic ginger beer! Enjoy the sunshine! It will probably be snowing next month!

Out in London town on a Monday Night. Such fun! First drinkies at the very discreet Experimental Cocktail Club. A very cool bar behind the most unassuming door in the heart of London's China town. And then onto the amazing...

Sputino's

Sputino's. Owned by the same people as Polpo. This central London restaurant is reminiscent to down town Manhattan (very Lower East Side). After brain storming with the waiter we (!) came to the conclusion the restaurant may have been a butchers. Its beautiful with all original features and markings. Except for the copper tiled ceiling..they cheated but it looks great! Chilli oil popcorn, Croque Monsieur, pulled pork & apple sliders, egg plant chips and fennel dip, whiskey choc and walnut cake...really must I go on! Recommended!

V&A Reading Room

Today we visited the V&A Reading Room on Exhibition Road just around the corner from the main event! Its a lovely little informal book shop which serves nibbles and drinks. With a full alcohol license, our kind of book shop! As we perused the books..today the subjects included London, Playboy Bunnies and Barbers in South African Townships (we like to mix it up!). Whilst drinking a glass or two of prosecco and nibbling like little mice on cubes of cheese. One felt quite grown up! The highlight was defiantly ear wigging on the table next to us. Three ladies who lunch discussing their kitchen redesigns and how they work much harder then their husbands at home (they had a grown up family). It looked like they were working very hard! Mr M was rolling his eyes...as I was..all quite eighties..but very entertaining all the same.
The Reading rooms run regular book signings, workshops and private hire parties!

Lost in Translation

Last week I travelled to Tokyo with my day job. (I know lucky lady!). On my search for Sunday thrift markets in Yoyogi Park and Togojinja Shrine I took a few snaps and soaked up the peace and tranquility just metres away from the hustle and bustle of Harajuku and the sound of overlapping J-pop.(my moment of that Lost in Translation feeling). The street artist above was mesmerising, the beats on his sound system (which he changed regularly) determined how hard and fast he would dab his canvas. His portrait is completely made from dabbed dots! After much searching I realised I had the wrong Sunday and maybe the hotel concierge were over whelmed with all my questions. I had quite a list..well whilst in Tokyo. I had the opportunity to thank my blessings at the shrine and put in a little request for help & luck with my future wishes. Placing my offering and desires into a sealed envelope which is then transfered to a wooden prayer plaque and placed on display at the shrine. Tokyo is completely unique, such an amazing place. I was very restless in the evening, mainly due to being so inspired during the day. The ideas were a buzzing....More pics here.

Robin & Lucienne Day: Design & the Modern Interior

Last night Mr M and myself ventured over to West London for a private screening of a film on Robin & Lucienne Day at PM Gallery. PM Gallery is a Grade I listed Pitzhanger Manor-House currently housing a beautifully curated (by Shanna Shelby) concise exhibition on the talented couples work. (The shops opposite were recently looted in the London Riots, luckly PM House escaped the mayhem...Scumbags!). Of course its very of the moment with the anniversary of the Festival of Britain and the on going trend of mid century modern. The film mapped their careers and life together. One of Robin Days quotes "You don't need new, you need good". In the current climate we could really learn so much from this phrase. Buy the best you can afford and keep it forever. They were the first of 'celebrity' style couples in fifties design, and incredibly glamorous. Both Robin and Lucienne were one of the first designers to produce functional products with a strong design aesthetic to the mass market after the war. Its safe to say all of their designs are design classics. Some more then others the polypropylene chair and Calyx print being true design icons. And some you maybe unaware off...the seats on London Underground. Both the modern metal version and the wooden bench! Great design thats functional and will last the test of time.

Last week I travelled up north to Leeds and Manchester on a vintage reckie in search of outer London inspiration. Vintage shopping outside London is always a) more fruitful and b) alot cheaper! On the vintage trail I found some lovely independent shops.
Le Chien et Moi is a beautiful shop in Nottingham on Derby Road. “An emporium of a diverse collection of unusual and beautiful things, old and new, with a touch of nostalgia" Le Chien et Moi is the brain child of two ex Paul Smith employees. Stocking old and new finds. The selection of brands is stunning all housed in a listed building. It really has a feel of a museum. I literally found myself standing at each display with my mouth open. If your in Nottingham its a must! And the website has to be one of the most beautiful websites I have ever seen! Swoon swoon!(I didn't take any photos..sorry but I was soaking it up!)

I planned to visit Blitz London’s first vintage department store today..but with diy, crafting and weather, this excursion will have to wait! Its one for the list for coming weeks. Sounds fantastic! Just off Brick Lane, I hear its five rooms in a warehouse space covering 9,000 sq feet and boasts more stock than any other vintage store in London to date! Everything from books, records, luggage, jewellery, furniture and homewares. Bring it on!

Diamond Dolls a fabulous vintage hair salon and shop, is located just off Islington's Camden's Passage. Beth luckily for me is a total perfectionist and spent two hours on my Mad Men inspired up do! It looked amazing! Although I did fear passing any naked flames. Astonishing how the ladies of the forties and fifties kept this level of maintenance up everyday! If only I had the time, the knowledge or the vanity to keep the routine of old. Having discussed this we have decided they set their hair once a week, didn't work (clearly because looking fabulous was much more of a priority..not jealous), and their knack for hair styling was passed down through the generations and was second nature. Hmmmm...

Another new dream like shop has opened in West London. The shops dreams are made of (I'm sure its been in the pipeline of the owner for sometime). Thrifty finds from Jess sold at reasonable prices. The Phoenix offers a wedding list service and rental for photo shoots etc. Jess also has regular courses on painting furniture worth checking out.

I love these textiles prints from ex Orla Kiely Scandinavian designer Maria Hatting. Beautiful colours with a contemporary reference to mid century modern.

"A lot of my work is based on memories from growing up in Scandinavia. For me that part of the world represents clean, spaciousness and closeness to nature. It is very modern but at the same time as it is also very traditional. My work is the same. By rejecting many of the traditional print making techniques choosing to draw and create some of my artwork freehand directly on the computer I will argue that you still have to train your hand–eye coordination in a traditional way to develop a personal signature style that can be classed as art. My work created directly on the computer has often a more hand drawn human feel than my work created with traditional pen and paper. I see the computer only as another tool for artists to express themselves. The outcome of the work is for me still very personal. All my work explores the relationship between colour, shape, texture, space, technology and tradition."

Two weeks until Vintage at Southbank! This weekend I will be on a one women mission to find a vintage dress. I'm not great at vintage clothes shopping..but I shall channel all my energy into this outfit.(wish me luck! Any tip offs would be great I'm thinking fifties). We booked our tickets on the day of general release. But if its out of your budget and you still want to be part of the weekend, there is lots of aspects of the festival that are FREE! (I love that word!). The Vintage marketplace is free with over 250 stalls open from 11am-8pm. Stalls include vintage homewares and clothing, vintage hair and beauty salons, Horrockses textiles, and a 'Vintage High Street' with modern brands such as Cath Kidson, Benefit...You get the picture.

Yesterday I took a trip to Regents Park for Blognic organised..by the very organised Lynne and Ellie! An informal meeting of like minded bloggers to chat and eat yummy homemade treats. As usual I left things to the last minute. My Oreo brownies were still warm when I arrived (late)! It was a lovely day..most of us went alone and knew not a soul...but left having met faces for many of the blogs we follow (and some new ones too!). Although I feel I could have challenged my technique of working the picnic blankets...next time! Still lots of people I would have loved to have a chat with.(Including Rob & Andrea who made the amazing blognic biscuits!).I took only a few pics as I was busy chatting to Katie, Tori, Hannah, Ray, Alexis, Elizabeth, Becky, Marianne, Carole, Michelle, Kate and Arianna.(I hope thats everyone!).

One of the best FREE exhibitions on at the moment is 1951 at the Royal Festival hall. Bringing together a collection of memorabilia, artworks, personal histories, models and memories from the original festival of 1951. Ensure you have enough time to sit down and enjoy the short films from 1951..hang around for the film of the Festival of Britain through the eyes of a working class boy. A must..and he is sporting an amazing fairisle tank top! Happy Weekend! (My new furniture has arrived!! Similar to the above..this weekend will be a domestic one..I can't wait).

Delicate Mayhem have popped up at many a market I have attended. The name explains all. The paintings are so detailed and delicate and really do sum up the capital. Although the subject is not confined to London town. Manchester, Dallas, NYC ...Beautiful and reasonable art for your home.

Kensal Green Cemetery Open Day

I had no idea cemeteries had open days. I pass this cemetery every day on the way to work. Its beautiful and so relaxing. Death is one of the last taboos for us Brits. Death should be a celebration of a (hopefully) long and varied life. I took the hour long tour along with some very glam goths (complete with fake boobs which I was mesmerised by! Sorry no pics!). Kensal Green is the oldest cemetery in London, full of Victorian royalty and gentry. And more recent famous celebrations of life include Harold Pinter. In olden days this area used to be just fields (if you know the area this is very hard to imagine) as a result the wildlife and fawna are beautiful. The catacomb is grade one listed and this heritage site (with little funding) is beautiful and worthy of your support. A strange day, lots of goths, pimped up hearse's, strange? crafts, coffin gingerbread (genius and yummy). My lasting memory though is when the guide elaborated on the tradition of Sunday walks in graveyards where you aspired to the lifes that had gone before you. Especially Victorians who on their grave would document their address and profession. A matter to be proud of (i.e Mr Smith of Pembroke Villas, Ironmonger). As I passed hundreds of graves from loriets, to royalty to mum and dad...they all inspired me to...work towards a life remembered.

I missed the Kensal Flea on Saturday and lost the opportunity to see Mistah prints. I hear the limited addition print of of the local area went down a storm. I can see why. I love the music series with each portrait made of song lyrics. Mistah is available for commissions.

For those of you who dream of moving. Or the 'forever' home with some style credentials...well this maybe the perfect estate agents WowHaus. Mr M reminds me of my short memory on how hard renovating a house was. I have flash backs but I also have impulses of 'new project, new project'. Bonkers! I love the idea of a mid century modern property filled with lots of car boot sale finds of the period. At these prices (esp the ones in London Town) its not going to happen. Well I can dream! In the mean time I have just bagged a couple of Ercol pieces on Ebay which have made me rather happy!

We received a lovely letter from Mr M's mum last week. As a loyal reader of Me Old China she is more then aware of my love for vintage photos. This is a picture of Mr M's Victorian relatives on his mothers side. I wish my side of the family had a vast resource of pics of a time gone by! The oldest pic I recall on my side is my mother standing out side the post office in the seventies looking HOT! Knee high boots, fur trimmed coat, legs that went on for ever! (shame the gene pool didn't extend its generosity to my inside leg measurement!). Thank you Margaret for the pictures..truly fascinating.

The South Bank have added pockets of greenery (and decking) near the Hayward Gallery. Although its no New york High line ...it really could be! A customer recommended Lower Marsh Street for unique independents and vintage shopping. I took a pootle down to Waterloo last week for a little inspiration. A great little road in the heart of commuter London. In fact it really has a feeling of a regular local high street of old (there is also a fruit and veg market towards the end of the week). Marsh Street is home to some amazing cafes, coffee shops and bars too!

I love Radio Days... GREAT vintage store..everything from homewares to menswear. With a steady flow of customers selling there unwanted vintage for cash!(more substandard iPhone pics!)
